February Outing-Backpacking
What better way to celebrate Presidents’ Day weekend than to go backpacking in the state park named for our 32nd president! We’ll enjoy two nights in the rolling hills around Pine Mountain, Georgia, as we backpack through the Franklin D. Roosevelt State Park and surrounding area. On Sunday, we’ll visit the Little White House, the FDR administration’s base of operations when he visited Georiga during his presidency and the site of his death.
Scouts should review the packing list on the troop website for recommended backpacking gear and should be prepared for cold-weather camping and hiking. If you are in need of a backpack or cold-weather (sub-32°) sleeping bag, please contact Mr. Slocum right away. The troop gear closet may have something you can borrow.
Scouts may use this outing to satisfy one or more important requirements for various merit badges. Please review the actual requirements and discuss them with your merit badge counselor BEFORE the outing. Note that if you wish to be a cook/grubmaster for the cooking merit badge you MUST contact Mr. Slocum immediately as many scouts will want to serve in this capacity. (1) Portions of the backpacking merit badge (2) Cooking merit badge requirement 6 (3) Hiking merit badge requirement 4 (one 10-mile hike)
